Re: Eating Guinea Pigs
The wife and I (at her suggestion surprisingly) have had roasted Guinea Pig while in Peru where it is considered a local delicacy. I believe they call it Cuy or something like that. Delicious!
Reminded me of a mild pork roast or turkey/chicken leg meat. I should add that my daughter who had a pet while in university was jaw dropping stunned when we told her about it. ha ha. . |
Re: Eating Guinea Pigs
Thanks. Those critters with their squeaks get on my nerves. It's good to see there's a use for them.

Re: Eating Guinea Pigs
Yup, popular in peru. I've had em, would eat em again.

I'm going to look into seeing if they are more productive to raise than rabbits. In the a SHTF scenario a few cages full of guinea pigs, rabbits or chickens may be worth more than a few gold coins. Also if there is a stigma to eating pets like guinea pigs, there would be less of a chance of getting a guinea pig stolen than a chicken. Finally, I haven't eaten one, but guinea pigs eat mainly grass (or store bought alfalfa pellets)-- it would be cheap to feed, higher in omega-3 fatty acids than grain fed animals, and tastier than pigs, chickens and other animals that scavenge and eat dead animals for food. I wish I could thank you a few more times. Great thread. Very informative and in it's proper place. |

Re: Eating Guinea Pigs
I think raising and eating rabbits would better though.
Poor little Guinea Pigs |

Rabits fight, bite and will eat their own young at times. GP's are much more laid back and quite docile........but that "fluffy factor" is the reall killer. You cant hang around them or they WILL grow on ya and forget about munching if the kids see them. T |

BTW a muskrat by far is the best wild game animal I've ever eaten followed close by a young beaver (The animal:36_1_30:). Both eat mainly fresh plants like the g. pigs. |

Re: Eating Guinea Pigs
Some years back I planned out a vacation trip to Peru (I called it off because commie rebels started kidnapping tourists).
If you travel anywhere outside of the major cities, the main two meats you find are chicken and guinea pig. -end- |

But the capy's do look tasty I have to say. And they got some meat on 'em. I see myself having so scarf down at least a half dozen guinea pigs to sate myself. http://www.splendoroftruth.com/curtj...s/capybara.png |

Re: Eating Guinea Pigs
i guess this falls in the category of, what's a good survival food that you can raise yourself in limited space ?
also, is it easy for you to get what it wants to eat ? i suppose guinea pigs are a good answer. since the guy has sold his wife on the idea, they can develop guinea pig cuisine. guinea pig omelettes, guinea pig quiche :coolbeer: there's one thing that didn't come through in the video, the SMELL factor. 30 guinea pigs generate a LOT of poop. if he doesn't clean the cage every day, STINK. |
